We hope you enjoyed our outdoor sketching event!
We’ve decided to further pursue this theme of sketching and take our learnings from the last session to the next level.

“Learn to Sketch” – A professional pencil-sketching workshop with Mrs. Subhashini Balasubramanian

About the Instructor:
Starting her quest quite early under her father Maniam Selven, Ms. Subhashini moved on to get a degree in Drawing & Painting from Stella Maris College , Madras University . Her talent further flowered at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where she pursued her Masters in Contemporary art. She also gained a special award of ‘Dedicated Practice’ from the University of Huddersfield in recognition of her outstanding performance during the course. She teaches and conducts workshops on Indian Art at Temple of Fine Arts, Singapore. Subhashini has also been trained in classical Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam.

Here you will be able to learn far more about sketching styles, perspectives, shading and many other features of pencil sketching! So join us for an educational and enjoyable worth of insight into pencil sketching!!

Outdoor Sketching !!!

Hey Art Lovers!!

For post midterm de-stress and a lazy Saturday afternoon, ArtVibe brings you the ideal event: Outdoor Sketching !

We’ll be meeting at 2 pm near the Starbucks at UTown and heading towards an exciting sketching spot where we could relax, draw and unwind with absolutely no care in the world.

JunkArt - A Million Creative Approaches to Reuse & Recycle

Paint for Fun - Bone Fest!

The second installment in the Paint for Fun sessions, Bone Fest, was held on the 11th of September.

ArtVibers visited the NUS Museum's 'Illuminace' exhibit and obtained inspiration from the artist's works before using it to sketch their own ideas on paper.

This was followed by a discussion of the sketches in which ArtVibers commented on their works and learnt from each other.

Paint for Fun - Happy Feet

The first event of the semester was held on the 4^th of September at the Central Forum.

Keeping in line with the ArtVibe theme of “Paint for Fun”, the event was all about having fun with paint and feet!

The ArtVibers were asked to make impressions of their footprints on chart and create whatever they felt like!

Welcome tea!

ArtVibe’s welcome tea, held on the 20th of August, served as a fitting prelude to the exciting year ahead.

The event started off with a presentation by the ArtVibe executive committee which was followed by an introduction of new members. This was followed by a fun ice-breaking session of dabbling with fun art!

Participants were split into teams and asked to sketch certain famous landmarks, animals etc. using only a certain shape for each team. This produced some stunningly innovative sketches that made even the more experienced artists proud!

On the whole, the welcome tea was a fun filled evening worth remembering for quite a while to come!

Looking forward to an arty year ahead!

Olympic Art Winners!

And here it is folks!!!! The long awaited results of the painting competition organized by NUS ArtVibe as part of the ’Olympic Art’ event; which went on to be a huge success, getting 1137 signatures from NUS students to show support for the Youth Olympics!

And the winners are: Elayabharath Elango and Tejasvi Ashok Achar! Here’s a sample of their work!

Olympic Art - A record attempt for the largest hand painted banner in NUS!

NUS ArtVibe is organizing a first of its kind event "Olympic Art", an attempt to break the NUS record for the largest hand painted banner!

In commemoration with the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, the theme of this event will be Youth Olympics.

Come down and put your signatures/paint on NUS' largest banner ever and the best contribution will win a whopping $200!!

Paints and brushes will be provided so all you have to bring is yourself! Anyone and everyone is invited to participate, so come down and help show NUS' support for the Youth Olympics and be a part of this record attempt!

Paint for Fun- Madness with Masks!

To finish off the first half of the semester, NUS ArtVibe conducted one last paint for fun session before the recess week and to celebrate the spirit of the Chinese New Year, the theme was Red and Gold - Masking Madness!

The aim of the session, as the title suggests, was to make a red and gold mask of your own conception. The participants got to work, unleashing their imaginations onto paper and coming out with some amazing mask designs which were then made into masks. After which, the participants got to take home their very own masks.

Paint for Fun- Cartooning Fun.

The weekly Paint for Fun sessions just took a whole new dimension with this weeks session on Cartooning. The session took place on the 6th of February, between 2pm and pm at the Central Forum.

The session began with the participants learning about what cartooning is and how to go about drawing the different parts of a cartoon. The eyes, nose and pretty much the whole deal about cartooning was covered in the two hour session, at the end of which the participants got to create their very own cartoon character and even make a comic strip out of it!!! Towards the end, the participants spent sometime reading each others comics and voting for their favorite to decide the best 3.

Paint For Fun- Pencils and More!

The second Paint For Fun session for the semester was organized by NUS ArtVibe on the 30th of January between 2pm and 4pm at the Central Forum. And as the name suggests, this session was all about learning the different techniques of pencil shading.

The participants had fun learning different aspects of pencil shading such as texture and gradation. They first completed a set of exercises designed to develop their shading skills, following which they went on to put their own ideas on paper.

Paint for Fun!- Basic Sketching and Perspective.

NUS ArtVibe is back after the vacation and kickstarted its activities with a Paint for Fun session on pencil sketching and perspectives. The session took place on the 23rd of January between 2pm and 4pm at the Central Forum.

The session began with the participants learning some basic sketching techniques and simple perspectives. This was followed by the participants sketching some simple images to practice their newly learned skills.

In the end a feedback session was conducted and the participants spent some time interacting and learning more about each other. More exciting events comin up soon from NUS ArtVibe.

That's my Country for You- A world without boundaries!

"That's my Country for You", NUS ArtVibe's biggest event yet, was conducted on the 21st and 22nd of October, between 12 noon and 6 pm, at the Central Forum. With over 125 NUS students participating, the event was a huge success.

The theme of the event was brotherhood among nations and the participants used their imaginations well, to put this in the form of one-liners and sketches, on the large scale map of the world that was made by ArtVibers. This, along with the collage made on the map, made the whole picture come alive with the spirit of unity in diversity in the NUS community.

NUS ArtVibe is organizing “That’s my country for you”, an event for everyone. It’s going to be all about our countries and what we are proud of! Participants will get to represent their country’s aspects through art on a large scale world map. One liners, Collages, pictures, just about anything that you feel proud about your country can be put up.

Paint for Fun- Origami and photo frames

Session 5 of the weekly 'Paint for Fun' activity, was held on the 10th of October at central forum between 2 and 4 pm. This week, instead of sticking to the usual painting and sketching, the session was more craft/origami oriented.

The session began with a demonstration on making a photo frame using only ice-cream sticks. After that, the participants got to work using their imaginations and ice-cream sticks to make fancy photo frames. The next activity was origami, where participants go to make their favorite origami figures and use them to decorate their photo frames.

Towards the end, a feedback session was conducted, after which the participants got their very own origami photo frame to take back home. More exciting activities coming up soon!

Paint For Fun- "Destress through Paint"

"Paint for Fun- De stress through paint" was held on the 10th of October between 2 and 4pm at the Central Forum. And true to its title, it was a wholesome stressbuster.

The session began with group painting. The theme was "Under the sea" and the participants got to work creating their underwater paradise on paper. Painting in groups, they came up with some vivid paintings which were then put together to create the vast underwater world!

After the break for recess week, 'Paint for Fun' Sessions are back! 'Paint for Fun- Session 4' will be held on the 3rd of October between 2pm and 4pm at Central Forum. The theme for this week’s session is going to be “De-stress through paint”.

It going to be a session to let creativity flow without the limits of professionalism, with participants given full freedom to explore their creativity. This will be followed by a small competition with cool prizes.

So just come along, get your hands dirty, make new friends with similar interests, let your emotions flow on paper and just Paint for fun!

'Basic Principles of Art' workshop

The 'Basic Principles of Art' workshop conducted by NUS ArtVibe was held on the 19th of September between 10am-12pm at the Celadon Room in NUS museum. The workshop was conducted by well known interior designer Mrs. Sunita Choudhry.

The workshop began with Mrs. Sunita giving a short introduction on the basic principles of art, in which she covered the 7 elements and principles of art, followed by color theory. She laid special emphasis on the effect on color on works of art. This was followed by a painting session where the participants were asked to each choose an abstract theme that reflects their personality and then make a painting of it.

The participants went wild, each choosing a unique color theme to reflect their personality. In the end, each participant was asked to show their work and the other participants took turns analyzing the work from their perspective followed by a description of the work by the artist.

Paint for Fun- Session 3.

The third session of the weekly "Paint for Fun" organized by NUS ArtVibe was held on the 12th of September. And as usual, it was unusual. This session was mainly occupied by the 'Art Appropriation' activity.

Art Appropriation refers to 'the practice or technique of reworking the images or styles contained in earlier works of art, in order to provoke critical re-evaluation of well-known pieces by presenting them in new contexts, or to challenge notions of individual creativity or authenticity in art’. To put it in simple words, each person takes a masterpiece and chooses a certain aspect of it that he/she likes the most and using that, creates an artwork of their own. Some of the masterpieces used in the session include "Las Meninas" by Diego Velazquez, "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso etc.

After the participants were done painting/sketching, they presented their work to the rest of the group and explained their choice of aspect from the masterpeices.

Mrs. Sunita Choudhry, an interior designer, attended the session as a guest, giving tips to the participants. She will be conducting a workshop on the fundamentals of a painting this saturday (19th September). To register, send a email with your name and matric number to artvibe.nus@gmail.com

Paint for Fun- Session 2

Session 2 of the weekly 'Paint for Fun' activity, was held on the 5th of September at central forum. This session was organized in a completely different way when compared to session 1. Unlike session 1, which was more of individual activities, session 2 was an art competition between groups of participants.

The participants were first divided into 4 groups and each group was given a chart, a common theme- "Going Green", and one and a half hours to showcase their imagination.
The groups got started immediately, choosing different media and different styles but all members contributing equally towards the end product. Apart from art, this also gave the participants a great opportunity to know each other better and make new friends.

After the allotted time was over,the artworks were judged and the winners were the group titled 'The timetravellers'. More exciting activities and events are all coming up soon!

Paint for Fun- Session 1

The first activity of NUS ArtVibe for the year 2009/10- Paint for Fun- was held on the 30th of August between 3 and 5pm at the central forum. The event which lived upto expectations was attended by around 25 students.

The event was divided into two categories- Beginner and advanced.The event got started after the participants had chosen which category they wanted to participate in. While the beginners were sketching still life, the advanced category went on to sketch or paint scenery and other objects. The beginners were given useful tips by the more experienced members.

After that, all the participants got some 'hands on' action and let their imaginations loose in making a poster with their handprints and names.

At the end a feedback session was held to talk about the days session and points were taken improve upon in upcoming sessions.

Lost touch with art years ago? Would you like to rediscover your forgotten talents? Looking to get inspired to paint and explore the creative side of you? ArtVibe is the place for you. ArtVibe is a NUS student interest group that aims to promote art and spark creativity among the students.

ArtVibe has been around for the past 6 years but this year, its back revamped as was seen in the welcome tea. The welcome tea of NUS ArtVibe for the year was held on the 25th of August between 6:30 and 7:30pm at the Celadon room in the NUS museum. The welcome tea, which was quite unlike any other, was attended by around 40 students.

ArtVibe’s motto of the year- “Keep Clapping” was also unveiled at the event.

Weekly painting sessions are organised and exciting events and projects are all coming up.

Outdoor Sketching

Art Vibe in collaboration with NUS Museum presents - "Introduction to Watercolour". A workshop teaching the essentials of painting using Watercolours. Learn to paint your dreams through the simplest medium, water. The workshop is conducted by Ms. Irene Hong, the President of Artists Association Singapore. She graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and now she holds executive committee posts in varying capacities in various art societies, art academies and art institutes in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Thailand and USA. Welcome Tea

Art is for everyone, everybody wants to create something, whether it is a painting, a poem, or a body of work on stage. Art is not in some far off place. A work of Art is the expression of a man's whole personality, sensibility and ability.

Art Vibe consists of a group of student artists who want to paint their dreams together. The aim of the club is to help fellow students to explore their creative side in visual arts. It aims to help students, not just with applying paint to canvas, but to do so with a feeling. Art Vibe tries to provide a good platform for students to understand Art and to help them express better. Furthermore, as the name suggests, it is here to increase the vibrancy of Art in NUS, to give it an artistic touch.

Circle Painting

Join Us and Celebrate National Day with Circle Painting!

Bring your family & friends and come spend a fun-filled afternoon at the National Library this 16 August (Sat).

Circle painting is a fun and interactive activity where groups of people can get together to create beautiful paintings. (You can check out the paintings at www.circlepainting.com <http://www.circlepainting.com/> ) The afternoon's activities will be led by Mr Nguyen Cao Hiep, the Vietnamese artist who created circle painting.

During a half hour session, participants will get to paint and learn the basic techniques and foundations of painting. You are welcome to drop by any time between 2 to 5pm at the National Library Plaza to join the activity.
